Not all laptop bags and laptop cases are created equal.

It used to seem that every laptop case was the same as the next: black, nylon, boooooring!. But not any more. There are literally thousands of laptop bags and laptop cases – so how does one choose which is right for them?  After all, you have just spent a ton of money on that shiny new laptop computer, so now you want to protect it – right?  But, you also want to look stylish, and perhaps almost chic!  Are you looking for functionality, safety, or durability?  Do you want aluminum, leather or fabric?  What style – backpack or case?

Now that your head is swimming, let’s narrow down your search and identify which is the correct laptop bag for you.  Below is a simple breakdown of the elements of a good laptop bag or laptop case that will assist you in making your selection.

Size

This is extremely important.  You don’t want to arrive home with a laptop case that is too small for your computer and all the extras that need to go along with it. Jamming your laptop into the case, is not only inconvenient for you, but may result in damage to the computer.  Remember – function and protection over price!

Construction

• Handles and Straps – You need to take into account how much equipment you will be loading in your bag.  The heavier the content, the better constructed you need the handles and straps to be.  If they are constructed of fabric or leather, they should be well-stitched to prevent tearing.  Also, if you are planning on slinging your laptop bag over your shoulder, make sure that the strap is a comfortable fit for those long walks through the airports or to your office.  You will also want to check that there are handles in the event that you want to just hold the case.

• Protection – this is what the bag is all about – protecting that expensive and reverent machine. Padding is a key component of the protection system.  It should be at least ½ - 1 inch thick all around the laptop storage area.  The bottom of the bag needs extra support to maintain the structure of the bag.  If you are planning on taking your laptop absolutely everywhere, and are a bit rough on it, you may want to consider selecting from the many affordable aluminum laptop cases on the market.  Also, bear in mind that extreme temperature conditions are very harmful to your computer’s hard drive.  If you are traveling to areas of extreme heat or cold, you should ensure that the laptop case you choose is insulated as well as cushioned.

• Functionality – Do you plan on making your laptop case a mobile office?  Check for ample storage pockets for paper, files, pens, cords, mouse, cell phone and perhaps even storage for your credit cards, and a few personal items such as sunglasses and lipstick.

• Ease of Use – If you will be traveling frequently aboard airplanes or trains, you may want to consider a laptop case that resembles carry-on luggage with wheels and a telescoping handle.  Make sure that you check the wheels and stability of the case – does is stand on end when not supported by you?  Are the wheels heavy enough to enable smooth pulling on rough sidewalks and streets?  Does the handle extend far enough for your height? Is the bag itself large enough to hold your 17 inch computer and all your supplies? Are the outside pockets easily accessible to gain access to your article when the bag is stored under the seat of the overhead compartment?

Backpack Laptop Bags

There are numerous backpack versions of laptop bags on the market.  This is a great solution for the frequent laptop carrier.  Choices come in a variety of fabrics including leather, fabrics, imitation leather and canvas.  When selecting from the available backpack laptop cases, check for ample outside pockets for quick location of passport, wallet, tickets, and cell phone.  The inside of the bag should be well padded for your computer protection and the bag itself should not be flimsy.  Many backpack bags are quite fashionable as well.  Choose a color that will compliment your favorite clothing color schemes and a style that fits your “look”.

Aluminum Laptop Cases

This is the best choice for the frequent traveler who needs to be prepared for sometimes rugged circumstances.  For instance, if you encounter numerous security check points, jostling in crowded streets, or shoving your laptop into overhead compartments, a sturdy aluminum laptop case will be your best friend.  When making your selection, check for that extra padding we talked about and ample storage room.  Ease of use makes the cost of this laptop case worthwhile, plus there are plenty of affordable aluminum laptop cases out there!

Fashionable Computer Bags

Let’s face it ladies, fashion counts!  Who wants to carry an ugly bag?  Luckily, there are hundreds of beautifully designed women’s fashion computer bags on the market.  If you want sleek sophistication, a beautiful leather bag may be your answer.  If you are college bound, a rugged backpack fashion bag in a great color would be a good choice.

Leather Laptop Bags

Several of the women's bags are made from leather, but there are plenty of unisex options for both men and women.  Leather is luxurious, wears well, and is always in style.  Leather computer bags offer style, sophistication, and functionality, and can range in price from affordable options, to those where having an expense account would be nice.
